César Nieto and the Carbon Footprint

Nowadays, the fight against climate change and the search for efficiency in environmental aspects is fundamental in the development of any activity, project or organization. To contribute to this, in César Nieto Group SL we have prepared a report to know the Carbon Footprint of the company and look for ways to reduce it substantially in the future.

WHAT IS THE CARBON FOOTPRINT?

The Carbon Footprint describes the total amount of CO₂ and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product over its life cycle. This calculation is an important tool to determine the degree of influence of the company’s activity on Climate Change, and serves as a starting point for the search for reduction and compensation solutions.

For the development of the César Nieto Group SL Carbon Footprint report, two main groups of factors that cause CO2 emissions were taken into account, which are classified in Scope 1 and 2.

Scope 1 factors include direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company, such as emissions associated with heating fuel consumption, fuel consumption of company vehicles, fugitive emissions of refrigerant gases from air conditioning equipment and CO2 extinguisher recharging.

Scope 2 groups together indirect emissions associated with electricity consumption, such as emissions associated with grid electricity consumption at fixed sites and self-consumption generated by the photovoltaic installation.

Based on the registration of these emissions, the emission factors are elaborated through the “Organizational Carbon Footprint Calculator. Scope 1+2. V.26” for the National Carbon Footprint Registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

In order to compare emissions between the different years, taking into account the level of activity of the organization, a series of indicators are established which are reflected in an exhaustive report where it is possible to observe their evolution in the different years analyzed. Based on the results of the 2018-2022 report, we have been able to establish Carbon Footprint reduction plans to lessen the impact of our activity on the environment.

MEASURES TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT

César Nieto Group SL has established a reduction plan for 2023 focused on reducing emissions related to electricity consumption, i.e. the Scope 2 Carbon Footprint. To this end, three main measures have been defined

Proposed Action 1: Purchase of energy from renewable sources.
One way to combat the current climate crisis and reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to contract electricity supplies with companies that sell 100% renewable energy, so the emission factor associated with such energy consumption is 0 kgCO2e/kWh.

Proposed Action 2: Sensitization and training of personnel on best practices for reducing electricity consumption.
It is proposed to develop an awareness campaign through courses on responsible energy use and the promotion of energy efficiency practices. In addition, it is proposed to prepare a guide of good energy practices to be distributed among the personnel in electronic format.

Proposed Action 3: Training of personnel in efficient driving.
The manner of driving is directly related to the fuel consumption of vehicles. Through the implementation of efficient driving courses, we seek to train drivers in new techniques and driving habits to optimize fuel savings.

In summary, the implementation of the first measure would result in a 100% saving of César Nieto Group SL’s Scope 2 emissions. The second measure is also focused on Scope 2, as an alternative if the first measure is not implemented. The third and last measure focuses on the fuel consumption of the vehicle fleet. In conclusion, if all of the measures proposed below were implemented, César Nieto Group SL. could reduce its Carbon Footprint by 53.3% by 2023.
